SYLACAUGA — For 21 years, the Rev. Manuell Smith III said he has been fighting the city and Board of Education to get fair treatment for the black community, whether it was students or the number of black teachers hired.
“This has become a racist community,” he said.
At a Tuesday night Board of Education meeting, Smith said he is prepared to walk the streets of the city asking parents to take their children out of city schools Friday and Monday. He said it doesn’t matter whether the students are black or white.
“I want parents to take their children out of school. This city and board are ignoring us. I’m planning on taking my three children out,” he said.
Smith said his main reason in doing this is the lack of black teachers in the School System.
